  • Secretary's Report      -      Jane Cummins                                                                                                                  i     Jane apologised for the belated minutes for the September meeting and read them to the meeting.
ii    She then reported that she had written to John Hoskins to try to clarify his position with regard to Cooperators. John went away on pilgrimage and wrote back afterwards to say he could either carry on as at present and hopefully the situation  might improve in the new year or he was willing to submit his resignation now.
iii    The three remaining officers ( Jane, Alex and Ray) met together for prayer and discussion to discern the best way forward. We sadly decided that we would accept John's resignation bearing in mind his present responsibilities and work load. We hope he will remain a Cooperator and join us when possible for meetings and special events.   Jane wrote back to John with our decision.
iv     As none of us felt able to take over the responsibility for leading the group we contacted Ken to ask for the benefit of his experience until nominations and elections could be organised. He has agreed to be Acting Coordinator until July.
v    Jane handed the meeting over to Ken.
  • Acting Coordinator's  Input       -       Ken Greaney

  2. This month we 'LISTEN to Our Lady, Queen of Peace'.  October is the month of the Rosary (hence the intention of the Mass) . The centenary of the apparitions at Fatima is being celebrated.  The message from Mary was peace,  say the Rosary. Listen and pray.
We finished with a decade of the Rosary.  We will do this at all other meetings this year.

SALESIAN ENQUIRERS (CHERTSEY)

MINUTES from meeting on 25th May 2017

Meeting commenced with prayer for priests, followed by Holy Mass for the intention of members of our centre and the Salesian Family in the GB province.
Reader:  Brian Barnes   Eucharistic minister: Jacintha Growney
The meeting was led by Ken Greaney who welcomed us all and thanked Fr Michael for celebrating Mass for us.
Apologies were received from John Hoskins, Hildegard Appleyard, Julie Drew, Jackie Moran, Carol Mule, Margaret Perks, Eileen Rankin and Eileen Surmun. Also absent were Maureen Benn, Sue Cooper, Josie Crossan, Chris Geary and John Lydon. 20 members were present.
Input Eileen O'Connell gave a thoughtful account of the life of Dominic Savio. She also kindly said she would write a summary for these notes. (Available HERE) As you may have realised when/if you read the minutes for the last few months I have tried to do this for the sake of our absent and sick friends. So thanks to Eileen for that.  The notes will be sent with the minutes.
Treasurer's Report: The basic accounts are similar to last month. The main discussion after report was about the M,HoC celebration day on 21.05.17.   The amount raised was £210 on the door plus £147.50 for the raffle. Expenses totalled £108.32. This left £249.32 which was rounded up to £250 and will be sent, as agreed last month, via the SDB provincial office, to the Salesians working in Aleppo.
Enquirers  Ray reported that the current enquirer, Betty Napper, has completed her formation course and would like to be enrolled as a Cooperator. This is likely to take place during the end-of-year celebration in July.
Lourdes Quiz Night Ken reported that the evening had been a success and had raised approximately £600 to give help to young parishioners who were going to Lourdes as helpers on the Diocesan pilgrimage.
Ashalayam fund raising dinner  John Ryan reported that the dinner had been well attended (about 70 - 80 people) and about £1900 was raised.
Mary, Help of Christians celebration day: Feedback was invited from anyone who had attended.

  • Firstly, thanks were offered to Brian Barnes for welcoming and coordinating the morning.
  • Next comment was that the same group of volunteers did the same tasks yet again. Why are others so reluctant to be involved?
  • A microphone would been an improvement for all but especially for those with a hearing impairment (and I'm not the only one!).
  • The prayer times were fine but we could have had more.
  • On the whole it was a good day but not as good as we have had in the past.
  • Next time planning has to start earlier (March?) and time needs to be given at the meeting to encourage volunteering with a time sheet and names taken. Face to face you get better response than an email which can be overlooked.
  • The general feeling was that we had received a lot from the morning session with Sr Mary Treacey talking about the start of the work of the FMAs in GB and in Chertsey. Again in the afternoon we listened to an enthusiatic talk by Fr Andrew Ebrahim on his experiences in Kolkata. We ended the day with Mass celebrated by Fr John Dickson with a thoughtful homily.

A.O.B;    Under AOB Ken issued a challenge to the Centre. In his view - and he emphasised it was a personal view -  he felt that as we were nearing the end of our "year" it was timely to review the current structure and content of our Programme and Monthly Meetings. In any organisation like ours there is always a danger of complacency setting in and allowing things to simply drift along without any periodic challenge to what we are all about. So, he challenged the group to give some thought to any ideas that they may have for possible improvement to the life of the Centre.  In order that the Officers of the Centre may take such ideas into account before drawing up and issuing the 2017 / 2018 Programme at our Meeting in July Ken asked for such comments to be made within the next three weeks so we can discuss at our next meeting (29th June). He encouraged all to put something in writing if at all possible.
PAL:  Rae Sustins quoted from PAL p55 article 52 on the Cooperators promise and how she feels its application in our lives.

  • DATES for your DIARY
  • Weybridge Deanery Care Mass Sunday 11th June @ 3:00 pm

  • Next Monthly meeting Thursday 29th June @ 7:30 pm (Salesian House) Topic (Input) Blessed Joseph Kowalski and companions, martyrs (Speaker Eileen Surmun)

SALESIAN ENQUIRERS (CHERTSEY)

MINUTES from meeting on 27th April 2017

Meeting commenced with prayer for priests, followed by Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Hugh Preston for the intentions of those who are unwell especially Julie Drew, Rosemary Ricci, Carol Mule, Margaret McCabe (Barbara's sister), Barbara Greaney.
Reader:  Eileen O'Connell                                           Eucharistic Minister:  Jane Cummins
Welcome was given to Fr Hugh Preston SDB who is the SDB Delegate for Cooperators and an old friend to many. He was thanked for celebrating Mass for us.
Apologies were received from: Hildegard Appleyard, Maureen Benn, Josie Crosson, Julie Drew, Madge Freeman, Chris Geary, Dorothea Gray, Barbara Greaney, Shaun Growney, Cecilia Hansford, Ben Hansford, Maureen Kinal, Jackie Moran, Carol Mule, Margaret Perks, Rosemary Ricci, Paula Wallace. Also absent were John Lydon, Mary Mootien. 20 members were present.
Imput:  John Ryan gave this month's talk on Blessed Alexandrina da Costa who was born in 1904 in Balasar, Portugal. In 1918, she was badly crippled when she jumped from an upper window. She had been working at her job as a seamstress when three  men broke in to attack her. She jumped out to avoid being raped.
Despite being crippled and in pain Alexandrina faithfully went to church until, aged 20, she became totally paralysed and bedridden. Although she prayed for recovery wanting to do missionary work it didn't happen. She offered many years of prayer and suffering in reparation for the sins of the world and for the consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. On October 31st 1942, Pope Pius XII pronounced that consecration.
From 1942, now aged 38, until her death in 1955, aged 51, Alexandrina lived entirely on the Eucharist. This was proven medically over a 40 day period of observation by doctors. She was monitored and was without food or water. It was also found that the Communion Host remained intact in her stomach for 24 hours until she again received Communion.
Alexandrina had a spiritual director and confessor who was a Salesian priest. She made her promise as a Salesian Cooperator and had a great devotion to Don Bosco.
Years after Alexandrina's death, a Portuguese woman suffering from Parkinson's disease, prayed for Alexandrina's intercession and she was completely healed.
Blessed Alexandrina Maris da Costa was beatified in 2004 by Pope John Paul II and the miraculous healing may lead to her canonisation. She united her sufferings with Christ for the salvation of the world.
Treasurer's Report:  Bank balance = £190 made up as £5 (ring fenced) + £45 (provincial subs) + £140 (missions)
Enquirers:  Nothing new to report
Fr. Hugh  updated us on Fr. Francis' work in Nairobi, in the formation and training of priests in the seminary and his visit to Embu and meeting with the FMAs including Sr. Geraldine Reakes (originally from Chertsey). Fr. Hugh also told us a little of his own work based at Battersea.
Mary, Help of Christians Celebration Day: Sunday May 21st.   i) Volunteers are asked to sign up asap on the timetable/ job list that John H. will put out as an email.    ii)  Discussion and vote to decide who would benefit from raffle and donations. Result was a unanimous decision to send all profits to the Salesians continuing with their work in Aleppo. iii) Reminder about donations of cakes, biscuits etc
P.A.L. :  p.37, Article 16 "Salesian Presence in the World".  The suggestion was made that members would read this in the coming week.
100 Club : For April no 47 was drawn
A.O.B. :  Nothing raised
Dates :

  • Mary, Help of Christians : Sunday 21st May, 10am - 4pm

NOTES from meeting held on Thursday 30th March 2017

Meeting  commenced with prayer for priests, followed by Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Michael with special intention of praying for the repose of the soul of Helen Amlot.

Apologies  were received from: John Hoskins, Hildegard Appleyard, Maureen Benn, Julie Drew, Dorothea Gray, Maureen Greaney, Shaun Growney, Maureen Kinal, Jackie Moran, Carol Mule, Alex & John Ryan, Paula Wallace, Ray Woolrich.  Also absent were Madge Freeman, John Lydon, Mary Mootien. 22 members were present.
Thanks   were given to Fr. Michael for celebrating Mass for us and John sent thanks to Ken for yet again stepping into the breach to coordinate this meeting.
Imput:   Ken gave a talk on Blessed Artimedes Zatti but first he mentioned that from the Salesian family there are now 8 Saints, 43 Blesseds, 9 Venerables  and 28 Servants of God. That's quite an impressive total!
Artimedes Zatti was born in 1880, the fourth child in a poor, working class Italian family. In 1897 they emigrated to Argentina and lived in a Salesian parish. He felt a vocation to be a priest and had to study long and hard due to his limited education. He looked after his young confreres. He became ill and later recuperated in the mountains. He asked Our Lady to pray for his recovery, promising to serve the sick, especially the poor.  Zatti returned to his community and was persuaded to take vows as a lay brother.
Br Artimedes Zatti fully lived his religious vocation in his Salesian community and served as a pharmacist for his community, for the poor people of the town and the surrounding rural areas, much loved, giving generously of his time and care.  He died on 15th March, 1951.

Salesian Cooperators – Huyton 14th  February 2017

DB and Mother

READING:  Philippians 4
I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord.  I will say it again, I want you to be happy.  Let your openness be clear to everyone, because your God is very close.  There is no need for anxiety, ask God for what you need.  Ask God with gratitude, and the peace of God will guard your hearts, and keep you close to Christ.
Fill all your waking hours with what is good and honest, what is life-giving and worthy of praise, then the God of peace will be with you.
This is the Word of the Lord,

Thanks be to God.

REFLECTION

COOPERATORS’ DAILY PRAYER

O God you inserted the power of the Gospel into the world like leaven
and called many of us to follow your Son as Salesian Cooperators,
with each of us living out that call according to our personal
circumstances in life.
Grant that we may be on fire with Saint John Bosco’s ardent spirit
so, that with Mary, Help of Christians, as our guide and inspiration
we may seek to help those in need, especially our young people,
and help build a better world.
Amen

Mama Margaret

MAMMA MARGARET – Mother of Don Bosco
by Teresio Bosco SDB
Ch.4 The Death of Margaret’s Husband
In his memoirs Don Bosco records the death of his father:

I was not yet two years old, when our family suffered a sad bereavement.  My father was strong and healthy, still young and actively engaged in giving us a good Christian upbringing.  One day, returning from work drenched in sweat, without thinking, he went down into the cold cellar.  He was struck down by a high fever, the first signs of serious pneumonia.  All attempts to cure him were to no avail.  Within a few days the illness had brought him to the point of death.  In his final hours he received the Sacraments and entrusted my mother to God.  He was 34 years old when he died.  It was May 11th 1817.
I only have one memory of those days, the first memory of my life; everyone had left the room where my father had died, but I didn’t want to follow them.  My mother said to me, Come on John, come with me.
I replied, if papa is not coming, I’m not coming.
My mother said, Poor child, you no longer have a papa.  Saying that, she burst into tears, took me by the hand and led me out.  I was crying too, but only because I saw her crying.  At that age, I could not understand what a tragedy had befallen us in our father’s death.  This event threw the whole family into chaos.

Recalling this event in later years when talking to his boys, he would add, I will always remember those words, You no longer have a papa.  On one occasion, Dominic Ruffino was there and wrote it down.  Don Bosco said, I also recall what my brother and I did at home on that occasion.  He was overcome with sorrow.  Poor Anthony, now nine years old, had seen first his mother die, now his father.

Mamma Margaret in Court
When her husband died, John Bosco’s mother Margaret was only 29 years old.  She was young enough to cope with three sons and her semi-paralysed mother-in-law.  She was left with a vineyard and land just sufficient for survival, with a shack which needed to be converted from a stable to a dwelling.  She did not spend many days feeling sorry for herself.  She rolled up her sleeves and went back to work.
From May to November, Margaret, with help from two farmhands, successfully completed the tenant-farmer’s season of duty.  She managed to save the best part of the harvest.  After November 11th 1817, the tenant-farmer relationship between the Biglione owners and the Bosco family came to an end.  The Biglione family however, in a squalid finale, took the Bosco family to court because they felt the fields had not been cared for and the harvest was less than what had been expected.  This family of lawyers prosecuted the young widow who had just buried her husband, who knew neither how to read nor write.  Margaret made many journeys to court on foot.  The sentence passed on Margaret was a fine of 22.5 lire.  This she had to accept by signing in the only way she knew, by making her mark.
During those months, Margaret’s brother Michael put everything aside to transform the shed from a stable into a basic cottage, and Mamma Margaret, her three sons and their grandmother moved in.  Despite Michael’s efforts, the cottage was the poorest house in that area.
This was a most difficult time for Margaret.  She had lost her husband; she had abandoned their house to accommodate her three sons and a sick old lady in a shed built to be a stable.  She had been summonsed and sentenced by the court.  She had to quickly set to work on the plot of land left her by her husband, to keep her children.  In March 1818, ten months after losing her husband, she also lost her dear mother Domenica.  Whoever understands family life knows how comforting it is for a young wife and mother to have her own mother around.  There was enough there for a young twenty-nine year old woman to despair.  Margaret however had great faith in God and great love for her sons.  She did not spend her time lamenting her situation.  She once again rolled up her sleeves and set to work.
Margaret’s hands were soon blistered by the hard work of ploughing and harvesting, but those same hands knew how to gently caress her children.  She was a strong woman, a worker, but remained a mother to her children.

PRAYER

We give you thanks, God our Father, for making Mamma Margaret
a strong and wise woman, heroic mother and wise teacher.
Give us the joy of seeing her glorified, so that her road to holiness,
found in daily experience and humble service,
may be an inspiration for us.
May we, like Don Bosco, follow her example,
Through Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Amen

NOTES From meeting held on Monday 16th Jan 2017

Enrolment of John Ferguson at Huyton Cooperators!  All of the Doms Cooperators were there apart from Winnie O'Neill who is suffering from a winter Flu!
We were very privileged to have Fr Gerry Broidy (new Provincial) carry out his first enrolment in Huyton.  Fr Tony, our Delegate, had arranged this as Fr Gerry was in Bootle on his visitation.  We had a special Prayer service printed out getting us in the Spirit and as John made his promise with our Support, the rest of us renewed our Promises in the presence of Fr Gerry who informed us he was extremely pleased to be undertaking his 1st enrolment in St Dominic's.

After the Service and presentation of the PAL, Certificate and Badge to John, he gave us an input of what the Rector Major wants for the future of our Mission.  He also updated us on what is happening within our Province.  We particularly remembered Fr Bernard Parkes in our prayers as he had talked about John becoming a Cooperator.  We also remembered Bernard O'Neill - our adopted scouser - who did so much in helping John over the last few years and who was with us in spirit too!

In true Salesian style we had a lovely buffet to share after the Service.  We had a little cake with smilies on for John and a large birthday cake as we were celebrating the birthdays of Christine, Margaret and Vera - but as Vera's was a special one we let her hold the cake!  A great night was had by all.

Apologies:

The topic for the evening was ‘The Apostolate’

We commenced with a reading of the Beatitudes (Matthew chapter 5 verses 1-12) and then linked that reading into Article 7 of the PAL Statutes - ‘The lifestyle of the Salesian Cooperator.’ Discussions then centred around Articles 8 - 12 of the PAL Statutes and Article7 (2) of the PAL Regulations. The bottom line was that the Apostolate of the Cooperator was UNLIMITED. With reference to the Cooperators Daily Prayer it was agreed our mission of evangelisation was shaped by WHO we are, our personal CIRCUMSTANCES and the OPPORTUNITIES presented to us. We then shared on our own apostolate activities. The meeting finished with a reflection on our opening reading of the Beatitudes and a final moment of prayer.

Appendix 1
Salesian Cooperators:  Provincial Council Meeting
Saturday 5th March 2016

Report of the SDB Delegate
On Saturday 12th December 2015 Dominic Kerr, a former Salesian who is currently teaching in a Catholic secondary school in inner city Birmingham was enrolled as a ‘detached’ Cooperator during a Mass celebrated at Savio House.  Dominic’s wife, Frances, and his daughters, Rebecca and Elizabeth, travelled from Birmingham with him for the occasion and attended the Mass at Savio house during which Dominic was enrolled in the Association of Salesian Cooperators.   Some of the Savio House community also took part in the Mass.  After the Mass, Fr Hugh Preston, Br Michael Winstanley and myself joined Dominic and his wife and daughters for a very enjoyable meal at a nearby carvery. I have suggested to Dominic that he keep in touch with the ‘Going Deeper’ group.   Martin Poulsom has contacted Dominic and has invited him to the next ‘Going Deeper’ weekend.
On Tuesday 9th February 2016 I drove up to Scotland.  I spent a very enjoyable evening with the Milton Cooperators at the home of Isabel and Brien McNulty. During the evening I celebrated Mass for about ten Cooperators and gave them a homily on the significance of the Year of Mercy.  After the Mass there were the traditional refreshments.   I spent the night with Isabel and Brian McNulty who made me very welcome.   I travelled back to Bolton the following morning.
Since the New Year I have been put in touch with two people who are have expressed the wish to become Cooperators: Ms Anne Robson, the sister of Fr George Robson, who lives in Torquay and would like to strengthen her links with the Salesian Family, and Deacon Eddie Wyman, who was pupil at Salesian School, Chertsey, and after a long association with the Benedictine community at Belmont Abbey, has expressed the wish to become a Salesian Cooperator.
On 8th December I had the privilege of inaugurating a new ADMA group in Bournemouth.  It is the second group functioning in the UK.

Sixth meeting held on Thursday 17th March 2016
(7 attendees / 5 apologies)

Present:
Ken (Greaney), Ray (Woolrich), Rosemary (Ricci), Eileen (Rankin), Pat (Rice), Brian (Barnes), Jackie (Mora

Apologies:
Sue (Cooper), Mena (Mootoosamy), Mary (Mooiten), Betty (Napper), John (Hoskins)

The topic for the evening was ‘Devotion to our Blessed Lady
We commenced with the recitation of the Angelus and then spent a little time on reflection of this beautiful prayer which sadly, appears to have ‘gone out of fashion’
It was noted with interest how the timeline of that little prayer encompasses so much of the tenets of our faith: invitation; response; birth; passion and resurrection.  We then looked at how we viewed Mary in our lives - the recurrent theme being that of the role of OUR MOTHER.  We spoke of Our Lady's visits to this earth (pilgrimage sites) and her repeated calls for reconciliation, reparation, prayer and sacrifice.
We touched on Don Bosco's love of Mary and how this was inculcated at Mamma Margaret's table and strengthened throughout his whole life.  How he started with devotion to Mary under the title of ‘The Immaculate’ before subsequently settling and promoting her devotion under the title ‘Mary Help of Christians
On his deathbed he said "The help of God and Mary will not fail you … I recommend devotion to Mary Help of Christians"
We concluded with a final silent reflection on the Angelus.

SALESIAN CO-OPERATORS (MERSEYSIDE)

Cooperators on Merseyside
Both the centres in Huyton and Croxteth continue to meet monthly with very active members.
Huyton last meeting in May was arranged to celebrate the feast of Mary Help of Christians with Fr Francis Preston providing an excellent overview of the life of Don Rua and his love for Our Lady. There were over 16 members there with a group from Croxteth and as usual we were all treated to a great buffet afterwards.
For the May meeting Sister Valerie arranged for the Croxteth group to join with the Salesians at Home group for a presentation from Vides on a recent Justice & Peace conference. It was a fantastic presentation by Sister Francis and Mary, which provided all 20 plus attendees with a great basic understanding of what Justice and Peace means and the place it is taking in today’s world. I have asked Vides for a copy of the presentation to upload onto our website.

SALESIAN CO-OPERATORS (CORNWALL)

CORNWALL MEETING APRIL 2015:

Cornwall celebrates Don Bosco
The weekend of 18th /19th April in Cornwall was one of real Salesian celebration for the Bi Centenary of Don Bosco’s birth . The local Cooperators Centre had planned to celebrate this event by arranging their termly Day of Reflection, led by Fr. Martin Poulsom, their SDB Delegate, to coincide with the Salesian Cooperators Provincial Council meeting in Falmouth, chaired by John Hoskins, the Provincial Coordinator. The weekend also included a Youth mass in Falmouth on the Saturday and a special celebration mass in Truro on the Sunday. (Order of Service is HERE)
Saturday started with morning mass concelebrated by Fr. Jon Bielawski Parish Priest, who is also Dean of Cornwall and a Salesian Cooperator plus Fr. Martin and Fr. Francis Preston, the SDB Delegate to the Provincial Council. Coffee followed and the start of proceedings. Councillors met for their meeting whilst Fr. Martin provided an inspiring presentation on this year’s Strenna “With and For the Young.” Sacrament of Reconciliation was available and then the inevitable Cornish pasty lunch. After lunch we had a further presentation then an exercise in saying what it means personally to be Salesian with emphasis on the adjective and not the noun. We finished off mid afternoon with a prayer session in the church.
There was then time for the visitors to see some of the delights of Falmouth with its Prince of Wales Pier looking out to St. Mawes across a very choppy sea so much so that the ferry had to be cancelled. Next was Events Square and the outside at least of the National Maritime Museum before having an early supper in Wetherspoons.
Mass was celebrated at 6.30 led by the young people of the Parish with several young people forming a new parish band organised by Fr. Anthony O’Gorman, a priest on loan from Westminster Diocese and one who had taught previously in the Salesian College Chertsey. During this mass Fr. Martin played his guitar and sang “Live the Dream” which fit in quite nicely with Fr. Anthony’s homily on having a dream. After mass there was a film show for the young people with pop corn and hot dogs to finish off the day.
Sunday morning mass in Truro was concelebrated by Fr. Gilmour McDermott, Parish Priest, Fr. Martin and Fr. Francis who preached the homily on Don Bosco, linking in with the readings of the day. Again Fr. Martin played his guitar and sang “Live the Dream” Mass started and unusually finished with the same song “Friend of the Young” with the words projected on a large screen. I don’t think Truro has seen anything like it with so many joining in the singing and clapping to the music .It truly did bring so much joy to the celebration. When the children returned from their own Liturgy Fr. Francis gave them all a picture of Don Bosco as a souvenir of the day.During the mass we had the enrolment of a new Salesian Cooperator, Sara Mason, and the renewal of their Promise by all the Salesian Cooperators present from four different parishes.

It was a wonderful weekend and many people had the opportunity to learn more about Don Bosco and the work of the Salesian family from the exhibition in the church porch and from talking to Cooperators and priests over coffee and cakes after mass. Please God the young people of Cornwall will benefit from the renewed commitment and enthusiasm generated over this weekend.
